It has been a busy few weeks since my students have officially started doing experiments in my lab. It is so wonderful to have students. It is just fun to have some human noise (not only the noise from machines) filling up my lab. Well, I am busy but I did not want to miss my second chance to attend the Sapporo microbiologist club seminar. I had so much fun when I first attended the seminar and when I presented my work in front of all the microbiologists working in Hokkaido area.

This time, two microbiologists gave talks, one talked about marine and freshwater ecosystems and another talked about soil microbes. I liked that they are very eager to find something new and are absolutely enjoying what they do. Also, good thing is that there are so many positive discussions after each talk. It is rare to see very active discussions happening after talks like this, in Japan.

More than all, the most fun time was “Jingisukan” or a lamb-BBQ party after the seminar. I made a few new friends and more importantly, one of my students who came along with me made a lot of friends too.

It has been 8 months since I came to Hokkaido and now I have a few students to look after. I feel very responsible but at the same time, I am being taught by my students to grow bigger as a scientist.
