ザンビア再び【Zambia, again】

また、行ってきましたザンビアに。今年最初の海外出張です。今回は、鉛汚染土壌の研究のための打ち合わせでした。なかなか難しい問題だな、と改めて思いました。ザンビアのカブウェという街には、鉱山跡地があり、そこに汚染された土壌がたくさん積みあがっています。それをどうするべきか、ということを話し合いに行ったわけです。土壌汚染の問題というのは、世界中あちこちにあって、どこも深刻です。なぜなら当たり前ですが、その土の上で私たちは生きているからです。土で食べ物を育てて、その土を踏みしめながら毎日歩いている。その土が汚染されていたら、私たちの体も汚染されてしまうのです。 土壌汚染を解決する方法は幾つかあります。植物を使ったり、化学物質を使ったり、という方法が取られています。いったいどの方法をこの土地に当てはめていけばいいのか、そのためにどういう調査や研究がまず必要なのでしょうか。そんなことを現地の先生たちと一緒に語り合うことが出来ました。

また、いろいろ考えることを抱えて日本に戻ってきたわけです。そういえば、アフリカで搾乳体験をすることが出来ました。酪農大好きな私には貴重な貴重な経験。

I have been to Zambia, again. My first oversea trip of 2016 was this one. I traveled Zambia to talk about soil contamination, particularly lead (Pb). Well, I knew it but I realized that this issue is pretty complicated and hard to deal with. A city called Kabwe has a pre-mining area and there are a lot of mine residues piled up. We have to think about what we do with them. There are number of places where soil contamination is an issue and at all of the sites, things are pretty serious because we live on soils and we grow our foods on them. Our body can be heavily contaminated if our soils are contaminated, for sure.

There are a few methods known to fix the problem, for example, plants and some chemical materials can be used. We discussed which methods are potentially efficient and what sort of research has to be done to prove that.

I have to say that now I have so much to think about... By the way, milking experience in Zambia was such an awesome event for me because I just love cows.
