ザンビア再び 【Back to Zambia】

ザンビアシリーズです。今回は、一週間ほどの滞在でしたが、たくさんの仕事をこなしてきました。このプロジェクトは、鉛などの重金属で汚染された街、カブウェ市の修復を目指していて、私達のチームは主に環境のモニタリングや土壌、植物を使った問題の改善を目指しています。「環境のモニタリング」というと少し難しく聞こえますが、私達はみんなこのモニタリングの恩恵を受けています。例えばウェザーステーション。これがあるおかげで、私達はある程度正確に、明日、明後日の天気、風向き、波の高さなどを知ることが出来ています。日本で最近問題となっているPM2.5などの粉じんも、たくさんの「モニタリング」が行われているから、私達はマスクをしたり、外に出るのを控えたりして対応できるわけです。 しかし、カブウェ市では、こういった設備が整っているとは言えません。ですので、例えば、鉱山跡地から飛散する鉛をたくさん含んだ粉じんが、風向きのために非常に多く飛んできている、としても、それを知るすべが地元の人達には無いのです。こういった情報を提供できる機器をしっかり整えなければいけません。

そんな思いで、今回は、ウェザーステーションを組み立ててきました。このウェザーステーションは、SESAMEといいます。実はSESAMEには水位計というセンサがついていて、川の水が溢れそうだったり、洪水のリスクを知らせたりするために使われているのですが、ザンビアにもこの機器を設置することにしました。まだ、川のそばまでこの機械、持っていけていないのですが、実はこの機械、太陽電池と、携帯電話のネットワークに繋がる技術のおかげで、日本からセンサのデータを「モニタリング」出来るのです。この機械を早く現場へ持っていって、そこに住んでいる人のために役立てたいと考えています。

We had been in Zambia, again, for a week or so. This project targets to mitigate heavy metal contamination-related issues in Kabwe city. Our team is particularly focusing on environmental monitoring and the remediation using plants/soils. The words 'environmental monitoring' sound difficult but we all benefit from the monitoring. For example, we all trust (well, at least rely on) weather forecasts, due to 'weather stations'. We also can recognize and prepare for environmental risks such as PM2.5 (small dust particles, a serious atmospheric issue in Japan) due to multiple monitoring stations for it, across our country.

However, we have to say that these monitoring stations are simply not enough in Kabwe. Thus, even though the heavy metal containing-dust is flying towards the people, they do not have methods to know this fact. We have to make sure we improve this situation.

We built a few weather stations during this visit. These are called SESAME. They also have a water level sensor to monitor things such as flood risks too. We could not take them to rivers yet but these come with solar panels and 3G network connection systems thus we can monitor the data in real time from Japan. We look forward to taking them to Kabwe and use the technology to benefit people living in the city.
