由仁町での放牧スクール【Grass farming school at Yuni town, Hokkaido】

There was another grass farming school, organised by a dairy farmer at Yuni town, Hokkaido. This school aims to train dairy farmers to study soils, grasses and cows. The school has been held somewhere within Hokkaido, every year.

I usually take a few students with me to this school every year. The primary purpose for me to bring the students along is for them to learn things from farmers. The farmers have a lot of beliefs regarding their farm management. They manage their lands on their own. Therefore "farming" is not one of those jobs that somebody else tells you what to do, and this is probably the most appealing part of the farming business. Thus students need to talk to farmers to understand that.

We also talked with many farmers to share our research and knowledge on agriculture and the environment. We also discussed the importance of dairying on the international scale. I wanted my students to go and talk to the farmers more actively. I need to train my students to be able to do that.

A lot of my students mentioned to me that they realise that the research within Universities and the actual issues brought to them by farmers are not matching. However, students need to understand how hard it is to change this situation. It is difficult for students to find opportunities to talk to farmers, and even when it is possible, it is difficult to tell farmers about scientific research.
