研究計画発表会【Student Proposal Seminars】

もう7月も末なのですが、研究計画発表会を開催することが出来ました。内田研の研究計画発表会は、毎年、いろんな人を集めてやっています。なぜかというと、私以外の人の意見を聞くことは、自分の研究を発展させる上で非常に重要だからです。なるべくいろいろなタイプの人を集めます。今回は、他の研究室からの学生、先生、スタッフの方、アメリカやアフリカからの留学生等々、非常に多彩な人を集めることが出来ました。忙しい中来てくれた皆さんに感謝します。

今年の研究計画発表会は、5人の学生、修士3人と学部2人が発表しました。小さいチームなのですが、やっぱり5人もいるとどうがんばっても毎日忙しくなってしまいますね。一人一人が質の高い研究をやることを目指すだけではなくて、それを通して生長したり、コミュニケーション力を磨いたりしてほしい、と心から思いました。

発表はもちろん英語です。英語で発表することはなんとかできても、質問に答えたり、議論をしたりするのは難しいですね。私もそういう部分でどう学生を鍛えるか、試行錯誤です。

It is already the end of July but we finally held student proposal seminars, inviting different types of people. I consider it is extremely important for my students to present their research proposals to people other than myself because listening other people's opinions on their proposals often makes their research quality much better. Students, professors, staffs from other research teams came to join our proposal seminars and I sincerely thank them for this.

Five students, 3 masters and 2 undergraduates, presented their proposals. Well, I know some other professors supervise far more but for me, 5 students are more than enough to make me extremely busy, although I am having fun. I really want my students to learn not only to conduct high quality research but to develop their skills to communicate through the research.

The proposals were done in English and my students did them very well. However, I still think they were struggling to answer questions. I am also struggling to teach them how to answer questions and develop discussion based on the questions. It is not easy!
