Workshop 【ワークショップ】

I was invited to talk at a workshop, organized by the Goto Lab, at Hokkaido University. The Goto Lab focuses on plant diseases and I really enjoyed talks done by Dr Goto himself and by his students. The workshop was held at Shikotsuko Lake, about an hour drive from Hokkaido University. The workshop was very casual but at the same time was very intensive. The discussion went on till near midnight but we really enjoyed it and I am sure all of the participants were inspired to carry on their research enthusiastically. The Goto Lab ran this workshop solely in English and it was very nice and encouraging to see Japanese students working hard, preparing their seminars in English. 先週は、いつもお世話になっている、お向かいの部屋の研究室の後藤デレック准教授によって組織されたワークショップに参加しました。一応招待講演ということで、てきとーではないですが、カジュアルな話をしてきました。北大から南へ一時間ほどドライブした場所にある支笏湖で一泊二日のワークショップでした。夜中まで議論が続いた非常にインテンシブなワークショップでしたが、きっと参加者はそれぞれ自分の分野の研究にさらに磨きをかけるようなアイデアを得たと思います。 後藤准教授は、このワークショップを（というか彼の研究室では常に）英語で行っていて、日本人の学生たちが一生懸命英語で話を準備している姿はとても励まされますね。偉い。
