微生物勉強会【Hokkaido Microbial Researchers Joint Seminar】

2015年になってしまいました。本来なら今年の抱負などを書くべきなのかもしれませんが、のんびりしすぎて去年のことをまだ書き終えておりません。というわけで通常運転です。今年のことはまたおいおい書いていくことにします。 北海道微生物勉強会という催しについては、以前も書いたのですが今回もこのように合同セミナーが開催されました。年末の忙しい時期だったのですが、結構たくさん人が来ていて盛り上がっていました。このセミナーのいいところは、単純に「楽しい」というところだと思います。若い方々が率先して企画しているのもすばらしいです。

私は単純に参加しているだけなので、いいとこ取りなのですが、いつも楽しませてもらっています。あまりわかりにくいことはこのブログでは書かないつもりなので、内容については触れませんが、微生物に関する研究をしている人がどさっと集まって、セミナーを聞いていろんな議論をする会です。簡単に言うと。

微生物という分野はとても広くて、例えば医学の分野では、様々な病気の謎を解明するための研究に関連していますし、私と近い分野では、いろいろな汚染物質を除去するだとか、物の分解のメカニズムを研究するときに微生物が出てきます。それからDNAやRNAを扱う人たちは、微生物を使って、DNAの働きを調べたり、逆に環境中のDNAからどんな微生物がいるかを調べたりしています。

意外とこうやって、日頃は触れない分野の人と交流することによって、新しいアイデアが浮かんだり、思わぬところで共同研究が発展したりするわけです。

It has been year 2015 already. I should have been writing my goals for the year but I actually haven't finished writing what happened last year.

I have written about the Hokkaido Microbial Resarchers Joint Seminar before (see here) and I always enjoy attending the event. I will not go for the contents of the seminar because it will be too scientific for some of you but basically this seminar is held by microbiologists based in Hokkaido and we discuss a lot of things together.

The scientific area called "microbiology" is very broad. Medical researchers may target microbes to identify mechanisms behind some illness while we focus on microbial remediation or microbial decomposition. Also, scientists who look at DNA/RNA use microbes to investigate the functions of genes or DNA extracted from environment can be used to identify what sort of microbes are living in there.

Surprisingly, associating with scientists working in different area can bring me a lot of new ideas and often it develops as new collaborative projects.
