ウガンダ・国際窒素会議 【International Nitrogen Conference at Uganda】

It was a first time for me to visit Africa. One of the benefits of being a scientist is that being able to travel around the world but I had never been to Africa yet. As an agricultural scientist, I have always been interested in agricultural problems associated with Africa, hunger and poverty. They are something that I had been thinking since I was a high school student. By visiting Africa, I felt that my dream has just started coming true. I visited Uganda and Malawi but will talk about Malawi later. At the 6th International Nitrogen Conference, held at Kampala, I talked about the mitigation method of nitrous oxide emissions from soils. I stayed at a beautiful resort near the lake Victoria. I guess my life in Uganda was a lot different from the ordinal life of Ugandan people but I was able to share a lot of things with African agricultural scientists so I could obtain some ideas with regards to what African farmers need now. 初アフリカでした。科学者として生きる上での特権は、世界を見ることができる、ということですが、アフリカにはまだ行ったことがありませんでした。農学に携わる者として、いわゆるアフリカ問題、といいますか、貧困・飢餓に関する問題をどうにか出来ないかという気持ちは常日頃から持っていました。それは私が高校時代から持ち続けていた夢でしたので、アフリカに初めて足を踏み入れたことで、そのような漠然とした夢が、具体的な案や目標となりつつあるのを感じられたのはうれしいことです。 今回はウガンダとマラウイという二カ国に赴きました。マラウイについては後ほど書きます。ウガンダでは、国際窒素会議に参加しました。私は口頭発表で、温室効果ガスを削減する方法論について述べました。学会場は、カンパラという大きな街の郊外にある、ビクトリア湖が見渡せるリゾートでした。そのため、アフリカの一般的な人々の生活とはややかけ離れた毎日を送ることとなりましたが、たくさんのアフリカ人研究者と話、情報を交換することによって、アフリカが今必要としている農業技術等についてのアイデアを得ることができました。
