土壌肥料学会【Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition / Annual Conference】

I always feel that Japanese scientists’ world is somehow very unique and Japanese conferences are good examples of it. The annual conference for Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition is a place for soil/plant scientists to present their studies and to discuss their recent findings however, it is more of an alumni/reunion party for many of the scientists. Young scientists are reunited with their classmates or supervisors and are having fun partying till late nights.
Well, for me, who has never been to a University in Japan, I feel awkward joining them so I used to have meals alone in a hotel. However, it has been a few years since I came back to Japan and because I did my postdoc in Japan, I started having many Japanese friends and good thing is I am looking forward to meeting some friends at this annual conference.
This year, I joined the conference with my own students, for the first time. Me, Shimotsuma and Chiba, presented our talks all in English (in front of many Japanese speaking scientists) and I say we did such a good job!
The conference was held at Tokyo so it was very convenient and fun. However, I miss conferences held at suburbs because we could find some original foods / cultures there.
