土壌肥料学会【Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition / Annual Conference】

日本の科学者の世界はある意味特殊だといつも思うのですが、この学会というのもその一つです。土壌肥料学会は、土に関わる科学者がもちろん最先端の研究について発表し、議論しあう場所ですが、それに加えて同窓会のような雰囲気も醸し出しています。若い研究者たちは、自分が学生時代に所属した研究室の仲間や先生たちと会い、非常に楽しそうです。夜になると学会会場の周りの飲み屋は研究室同窓会などでにぎわっています。 私はそういった雰囲気にあまり馴染めず、というか学生時代日本に居ないので馴染めるわけがないのですが、日本に来て数年は一人でコンビニ弁当をホテルの部屋で食べたりすることも多い土壌肥料学会だったのですが、日本に帰って来て、職場も二つ目（つくば～北海道）ということで、だいぶ私にもお友達が増え、学会で会えるのを楽しみにできる人もちらほら出てきました。 今年は、自らの学生を連れて初参戦ということで、4年生の下妻、千葉を連れていきました。私、下妻、千葉はすべて英語発表を行ったので、かなり浮いていましたが、浮いてなんぼの内田研究室ではないでしょうか。よくがんばった、とほめてあげました。 学会会場は東京でしたので、近場でご飯を食べたり、少し遊んだりすることも出来ました。地方で学会をやるときはその土地でおいしいものを探したりするのも楽しみですが、東京は便利ですけれどそういう喜びは少ないですね。 I always feel that Japanese scientists’ world is somehow very unique and Japanese conferences are good examples of it. The annual conference for Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition is a place for soil/plant scientists to present their studies and to discuss their recent findings however, it is more of an alumni/reunion party for many of the scientists. Young scientists are reunited with their classmates or supervisors and are having fun partying till late nights. Well, for me, who has never been to a University in Japan, I feel awkward joining them so I used to have meals alone in a hotel. However, it has been a few years since I came back to Japan and because I did my postdoc in Japan, I started having many Japanese friends and good thing is I am looking forward to meeting some friends at this annual conference.

This year, I joined the conference with my own students, for the first time. Me, Shimotsuma and Chiba, presented our talks all in English (in front of many Japanese speaking scientists) and I say we did such a good job!

The conference was held at Tokyo so it was very convenient and fun. However, I miss conferences held at suburbs because we could find some original foods / cultures there.
