少しずつ前へ、、、【A little by little】

もう６月も終わりになってしまいました。いろいろとどうなることやら、と思いましたが、状況は少しずつ改善しています。いくつかのプロジェクトは、目的を見直したり、期間を延長したりすることになりそうです。その辺も夏以降いろんな話し合いをするのでしょうが、とにかく僕たちは前向きにやってこれています。学生にはいろいろな我慢をさせているのですが、よく指示を聞いてくれて、感謝です。

ここ一カ月は、半年間くらいの進捗を報告したり、新しくチームに加わったメンバーはこれからの研究計画について発表したりしていました。チームの人数が多いので、三週間に分けてオンラインで行いました。活発に質問しあうこともできましたし、録画しておいて後から他の人に見せる、なんてことも可能なので、それはそれでいいことなのかなと思いました。

アフリカをはじめとした海外のプロジェクトは、まだまだ先が見えないのですが、国内のプロジェクトはいろいろと進められそうな気がしています。ある企業と連携して市内の調査をすることができたり、たぶんですが、来月以降は市外にも繰り出すことができるのではないかと考えています。都心部にはまだ少し行くことができなそうですが、それも少しずつですね。

私たちの分野である、地球環境に関わるアレコレも大きく変わりそうですね。この新型コロナ禍で、大気汚染が大きく改善されたという話も出ています。それはそれですばらしいことですが、果たしてそれが持続可能なのかどうかが大切です。持続可能性（サステナブル）という言葉は、まだまだ聞きなれない言葉かもしれませんが、私たちは論文や研究計画の中で必ずと言っていいほど使う言葉です。私たちだけでなくて、次の若い世代、次の次の生まれていない世代において、地球が美しいままで、、、むしろもっと美しくしていけるのか、という話なんです。

We had been wondering where this world was going, but things are improving, a little by little. Some of our projects need to be modified or extended, probably based on some discussion during summer. Anyway, we are doing great and remaining positive. My students are doing wonderfully well and listening to my directions so well. I thank them a lot.

Over the last few weeks, we were running several seminars, sharing our research progress or proposals. The seminars had been held for three weeks in a row because of the number of presentations we needed to have. Although these were held online, we could still actively ask questions each other and we could also record the seminars and share them with others, if needed.

The other projects, particularly those related to Africa, will not start for a while, for sure. The other domestic projects will be started soon. We started collaborating with a company, doing some field research within our city. Also, probably we will go outside the Sapporo city, in a month or so. We cannot go to Tokyo yet, but see how we go!

Our research area, environmental science has severely affected by this COVID-19. There are reports stating that air pollution situations markedly improved over the last few months. It is a wonderful thing but the question is wheather this is "sustainable" or not. The word "sustainable" may not be familiar to some of us but we often use the word in our papers and proposals. We are trying to make this world better and cleaner place, not only for our generation but also for future generations. Not easy.
