Returned from Lincoln, New Zealand [ニュージーランドに行ってきました]

For the last 8 days or so, I have been visiting Lincoln University, where I have studied for 7 years. The main purpose of the visit was to catch up with my supervisors and to organize a collaborative research between my lab and their teams. I could see that Lincoln University is still recovering from the earthquake but at the same time, scientists at Lincoln are doing fine and energetic as ever. Lincoln University is a relatively small University when compared to Hokkaido University but we have many similarities. Both Universities started as agricultural colleges and then progressively grew as Universities globally recognized. ‘Agriculture’ is definitely the strength for both Universities and simply because I am in the research faculty of agriculture, I am hoping for the stronger connections between Hokkaido and Lincoln. Whenever I visit New Zealand, I love its sky and green pasture. It was the beginning of winter season over there and we had some beautiful frosty mornings.

ここ一週間ほど、ニュージーランドのリンカーン大学を訪れていました。私が7年間留学していた場所です。私は日本の大学に学生として在籍したことはないので、ここが私の母校です。大きな目的の一つは、指導教官たちと再会し、新たな共同研究に関するアイデアを共有することでした。リンカーンは、クライストチャーチの大地震の影響を受けてまだまだ復興途中でしたが、大学の科学者たちはいつも通り情熱的で、たくさんのアイデアをもらうことが出来ました。

リンカーンは北大に比べると小さな大学ですが、たくさんの共通点があります。どちらも小さな農業学校として始まり、今では国内外によく知られた大学となっていますが、やはり強みは農学部にあります。私が単純に農学研究院に属しているから、というのもありますが、やはりこの2校が連携するのは農学の分野からだと思います。

ニュージーランドは、いつ行っても空が濃い青色で、牧草の緑とのコントラストが最高です。今の時期は冬でしたが、朝焼けと共に牧草に降りた霜がキラキラと輝く姿は何度見ても感動的で、心が洗われます、、、。
