ニュージーランド・リンカーン大学サマーキャンプ（その１）【Summer Program at Lincoln University, New Zealand – Part 1】

北大に来てから難しいと感じていることの一つは、「大学生の英語力をどう向上させるか」ということだ。多くの北大生は、「英語は話せるようになりたいけれどチャンスがない／難しい」と感じていて、初っ端から「出来ない」と思い込んでいる生徒が多い。その一方で、北大だけではなく日本中の大学が今「グローバル化」という名の元にいろいろなプロジェクトを進行させている。あくまで一個人としての意見だが、政府や大学は「グローバル化」を今のところ効率よく実現できてはいないのではないか。 学生の英語力を高めたいのであれば、そのための教育が出来る人材がいなければいけない。大学で教える英語は、単なる英会話ではなく、例えば農学部なら「農学」英語であるべきで、専門的な英語を教えることが必要となってくる。 そんな強い思いを持ってここ一年、試行錯誤しながらやってきているのだが、今回は北大から少しだけ予算をいただき、学生にニュージーランドで「農業」英語を学ばせるというプロジェクトを立ち上げることが出来た。もちろん行先は私の母校、リンカーン大学である（続）。 Since I was appointed at Hokkaido University, I have been feeling some difficulties in developing students’ ability to speak English. Many students feel that there are not many chances to speak/use English and they do not even push themselves hard enough to improve their English. Contrastingly, Japanese Universities have been started many projects under the name of “globalization”.

In my personal opinion, I do not think these projects are effectively performed. For example, to improve students’ English, somebody has to teach them. English taught in Universities has to be more than just basic conversation skills, but should be more specialized. Agricultural students have to learn some special terminologies used in Agriculture.

I have been struggling to do this for the last 12 months or so. Recently, my University offered a small fund for students to go to New Zealand to learn some Agricultural English. I started a project to send some students to Lincoln University, where I studied (to be continued).
