ニュージーランドへ、再び 【To New Zealand, again】

またかよ、と思われそうですが、母校を訪問していました。今回は主に打ち合わせ。留学に関していろいろと調整したり、コラボレーション出来そうな分野について確認したり、ということをしていました。冬の北海道から夏のニュージーランドへ飛んで、しっかりと夏をエンジョイしようと思っていたのですが、結構寒いし、なぜか雹が降ったりするし、なかなかカオスなクライストチャーチの気候でした。 日本にはニュージーランドへ留学したい、という学生さんがたくさんいるのですが、実際、日本の大学へ一旦入ってしまうと、カリキュラムの関係やお金の関係などなどで、外へ出たくでも出られなくなってしまう人も多いのが現状です。日本の大学に行ったんだから当たり前、と思われる方も多いかもしれませんが、世界的に見るとこれは結構不思議で、海外ではいろんな大学を渡り歩いて結局どこの大学を出たんだかわからない人に結構出会います。単位互換をすればいい、という感じで、いい先生が大学を異動するとついて行ったりする、ということもあります。

そのようなわけで、日本政府も、文科省などがお金を出して、留学支援を一生懸命しているわけですが（私が学生だったころは考えられないくらい！）、私も自分で出来る限りのことはしようかと思ってこうやって度々自分の母校へ顔を出していろいろと交渉をしているわけです。でも現地で友達に会ったり、同時期にクライストチャーチに来ていた日本人たちと交流をすることも出来ました。ちょっとだけリラックスできるのも母校に来る喜びです。

I have been visiting Lincoln, New Zealand, again. I had several meetings during this visit in terms of student exchange systems and future scientific collaborations. I was hoping to enjoy the summer in New Zealand but it was rather cold and once was hailing. Very strange weather in Christchurch.

I see so many Japanese students who want to study in New Zealand but unfortunately, it is often difficult for them to study overseas once they enrolled a local Japanese University due to its curriculum and also to finance. Some students from overseas take subjects from many different Universities because in overseas, often credit exchange systems are nicely structured.

Well, the Japanese government spends a lot of money to support Japanese students who want to study abroad (much more than when I was a student), and I am trying to take my part, supporting the students. This was the main reason for this particular visit to New Zealand but catching up with my old friends and also seeing Japanese friends who happened to be visiting New Zealand at the same time was quite nice.
