フィールド調査 【Field data collection】

北海道の夏はとても短いので、もうそろそろ終わりと言ってもいいでしょう。そのため、植物を育てたり、フィールドでの調査をしたりするような実験はとても大変です。短い間にたくさんのデータを取って、冬にそれを一生懸命解析する、というサイクルになってしまいます。私もニュージーランドでは夏でも冬でも土を取ったり草を調べたりしていたのですが、北海道に来てからはそうもいかないです。もちろん凍った土を調べるような実験はそれはそれで面白いのですが。 というわけで、今回もフィールド調査の準備を進めています。道内の草地や川などを調べる予定です。何事もしっかり準備することが大切です。特に、たくさんの人が関わる実験やプロジェクトでは、どうしても「だれかがやるんじゃないか、とか、だれかが準備したと思ってた」ということが起きてしまいます。そうならないための準備です。

というわけで、必要そうなものを並べてみましたが、やっぱり忘れ物がどこかにありそうな気もしています。

Summer days in Hokkaido are very short, nearly in the end. Thus, for those researching natural plant growth and/or phenomena outside in the field may have hard time. They are often so busy during spring to summer period and then analyze everything over the winter. I used to go outside for data/soil collection throughout the year when I was in New Zealand but not anymore here in Hokkaido. Although we have started some new experiments such as an experiment using frozen soils.

We are preparing for our almost final field research trip this year. We are hoping to look at some pastures and rivers around Hokkaido. Preparation means a lot. Especially when we run projects as a big team, we often simply assume that somebody else prepare everything for you. We try not to make it happen.

Well, we have spread all the gears on a blue sheet to check whether we forget something or not but see how we go.
