アフリカに行きたい人たちへ【For someone who wants to go to Africa】

更新してなさすぎです。すいません。今回もアフリカへ行ってきましたのでご報告です。11月頭にケニア～マラウイ～ザンビアとサブサヘルアフリカ周遊調査旅へ行ってきました。大東君が初アフリカということで、体調・疲れ等々心配しながらでしたが、とてもよくやってくれたと思います。簡単に言うと「土を採ってきただけ」なのですが、その大変さ、かかるお金の大きさ（びっくりするくらいいろんなところでお金を取られてしまいます。サンプリング、輸出許可、輸入許可、検疫、、、）、手間、必要なコミュ力、など、学んでもらえたのではないかと思います。

アフリカは、どうしてもひとくくりにされがちですが、ほぼ隣り合わせのこの三カ国でも、農業と環境に関する問題はいろいろと違いがあります。ある程度、環境保全型農業に関する研究は進んでいるが、その農法の普及や農家の理解を進めることが必要だ、という印象のケニア、土地が狭く、いたるところを開墾しており、土壌浸食が極めて深刻で、国の半分が湖に面しているにも関わらず水資源の利用法がまだまだ確立されていないマラウイ、小規模農業と、地下水を多量にくみ上げた西洋スタイル農法が混在するカオス状態のザンビア、と言った感じです。

こういった問題を肌で感じて、なんとかそれに帰するような研究をする人を育てていくというのが私の仕事なのかな、と思っています。

うちの研究室には、アフリカに行ってみたいという学生がたくさん入ってくれるのですが、困ったことに全員を連れていくことが出来ません。一応、私がこいつを連れて行こう！と決める基準になる部分を書いておくので参考までに。

１）おおらかな人。イライラしたり機嫌が悪くなったりということが少ない人。

アフリカでは計画していても物が無いとか人が来ないとか電気が無いとかバケツひっくり返したような雨が降っているなどで出来ないことが多いです。そんなとき、どう考えるか、まあ仕方ねぇ、という性格の子はアフリカでも大丈夫。一方で、ちょっとした晴れ間とかに一気に仕事をやる必要があるときもあります。そんなとき、私は猛烈に急いであせって仕事をします。そんなときもイライラせずに柔軟に動けるな、と日ごろの生活で感じる子はアフリカチームに招待します。

２）アフリカのためになれる人

アフリカの発展は持続的でなければいけません。今のアフリカの発展は海外からの投資（多くは借金）で成り立っており、この先もこれが続くかどうかは危ういということがTICADなどでも言われています。じゃあどうするのか？ 農業分野で機械化、大規模化を進めるだけではなくて、効率のよい肥料管理や、循環型農法、土壌保全などをどう進めるのか、そういうビジョンをもって、私はアフリカでこういうことをしたい！というやる気がある人がいいです。

３）現地の研究者・学生と連携できる人

アフリカで研究をするときには、必ず現地の研究者や学生がお手伝いしてくれます。自分のやりたいことが、現地の先生からするとちょっと違うと感じるかもしれません。そういうときに、きちんと説明したり、議論したり、アドバイスも踏まえて研究をさらに現実的に発展させられるかどうか。そういう能力（英語力、コミュニケーション力、自分の意見が違う人との議論の仕方）を見ています。

I am sorry for not updating for a while. We have been to Africa again. We went through Kenya, Malawi and Zambia in early November. For Takamitsu, this was his first African experience, and I was worried about his health. However, he did extremely well. Simply, we have just sampled some soils, but he must have understood how hard it was regarding the cost, permissions and all the other complicated processes.

People sometimes think that the issues are all similar in Africa, but this was not true. Kenya has developed agricultural research sectors and knowledge regarding sustainable agriculture, but their implements to farmers are difficult. Malawi has such a small land and heavy cultivation and soil erosion are the issues. Water use efficiency is another thing in Malawi (although it faces one of the largest lakes in Africa). Zambia is chaos, with the mixture of sophisticated farming systems with the centre-pivot irrigation and many traditional small scale farms.

I want to educate young ones so they can feel these difficult issues and start dreaming about researching to solve these.

Many students knock on the door of my lab, thinking about doing something in Africa. Unfortunately, I cannot take all of them. Here, I write some of the things I see when I decide with who I take to Africa.

1) Peacefulness/big-hearted person

Almost nothing goes well according to the plan, in Africa. Often there are no tools, people not coming in time, no powers or there is unexpected heavy rain. You really have to have a personality to take these things easy. Thus, if students are stressed with small things even in Japan, I do not think it is easy for them to survive in Africa. I want peaceful stress-less students.

2) Somebody who can do something good for Africa

I strongly want to contribute to sustainable development in Africa. There are many ways to contribute to it. Students have to have their own visions for that. This means students should want to go to Africa, just because of themselves but for Africans.

3) Communications with local scientists and students

We must get a lot of help from them, during our research trips. Our plans have to flexible because the local researchers know much more than us. Students have to explain their plans in details to them and they have to be able to do good discussion with them. When the opinions are different, students have to work something out through good English, communication skills and attitudes. I observe those qualities when I discuss things with my students.
