2014年第一回ミーティング【First meeting in 2014】

It has been a year since I was appointed to this job. Good thing is that I am totally enjoying my job. The only negative side is probably that I am really busy. However, even for us young ones, we should consider being busy is also a positive thing. The first meeting of this year was held two days ago. During the meeting, we have practiced for TOEFL iBT, the essay part. TOEFL iBT is an English test required to study at many of Universities overseas. It has several sections, for example, listening, reading, and grammar. Additionally, the essay writing is an important part of TOEFL iBT. However, I realized that students are struggling to improve their essay writing skills simply because they do not know what to do. We (me and 3 students) spent half an hour writing an essay and then another half an hour correcting the essays. It was fun and I hope we can do this session once a month or so. I am looking forward to seeing their essay writing skills improving in near future. この仕事を初めて一年経ちました。喜びの多い仕事と現在まで感じているのは幸いですが、同時に忙しくなりすぎている感もしております。忙しいというのもこの時代の若者にしてみれば「幸せ」と感じるべきなのかもしれませんが。 今年初めのミーティングは、2日前に開かれ、TOEFL iBTのためにエッセイを書いて添削するというセッションを初めて取り入れてみました。TOEFL iBTとは海外の英語圏大学へ留学するために必要となるテストの名前で、リスニング、読解、文法などのテストに加えエッセイを書くことが求められます。留学を希望する学生と接しながら気づいたのは、エッセイの書き方についてどう勉強すれば良いのかわからないと思っている人が多いということでした。 今回は、内田研究室の学生らと、30分かけてエッセイを書き、30分で添削などを行うというセッションを行いました。月一度くらいはこのようなセッションを続けられれば良いです。若い学生はすべてにおいて驚くほど速く成長します。エッセイを書く技術の進歩を見るのも楽しみです。
